Leon County Chapter
A Legacy of Service
Founded in 1951 by Gwendolyn Baker Rodgers and Frankie Drayton Thomas in West Palm Beach, Florida, The Charmettes, Incorporated is a national civic organization dedicated to community service. Recognizing the power of collective action, they established the first chapter with 10 like-minded women.
Since then, the organization has donated over $1 million to the Howard University Cancer Research Center, focusing on cancers that disproportionately affect communities of color.
Established in 1969 by Lillian Oglesby, Lonnie Adams, Dr. Barbara Barrett, Sylvia Beacham, Dr. Barbara Richardson Cotton, Dorothy Harp, Mae Jackson, Dr. Gladys Lang, Doretha Mungen, Clarie Perry, Gertha Redman, Bettye Stevens, and Dr. Eva C. Wanton. Today, five charter members — Mae Jackson, Dr. Gladys Lang, Doretha Mungen, Clarie Perry, and Bettye Stevens — remain actively involved in the chapter’s efforts.
The Chapter’s signature event, the Debutante Presentation and Ball, has honored over 1,000 young women, awarding more than $300,000 in scholarships. Through workshops and mentorship, participants gain essential life skills and prepare for their futures.
Another key initiative, Party with a Purpose, is an annual Super Bowl fundraiser that supports cancer research and men’s health awareness, particularly prostate cancer.
The Chapter is among the top contributors to the Howard University Cancer Research Center and actively supports local causes like Relay for Life, American Cancer Society, Light the Night (Leukemia & Lymphoma Society), Wigs for Cancer Patients, Tree of Remembrance and Adopt-a-School & Christmas Adopt-a-Family Programs.
Additionally, the Chapter sponsors a Junior Debutante Program for high school sophomores and juniors and dedicates volunteer hours to organizations such as the Urban League of Tallahassee and the Early Learning Coalition of the Big Bend.
The Leon County Chapter of The Charmettes, Incorporated was recently recognized by the Leon County Board of County Commissioners for its service. The Chapter continues to uplift the community through education, health initiatives, and charitable giving.
